Heads up there's a new fraud trend, fake mutual aid accounts.
Brand new sign up dates and immediately started @'ing people for support.
Especially in our community I find this stuff particularly offensive.
So be sure someone is legit before you boost a #mutualAid request. And report these fraud accounts if they @ you.
Eg of the latest one I got:
@vlrny grrrrrr . . .
@DrSuzanne so much grrr!
@vlrny Just blocked & muted. Twice this week.
@Tooden same same. It's a hard press for sure.
@vlrny I've seen so many long-standing #MutualAid requests I'd totally have supported if I could, that haven't even @ed me--when ones like that started @ me, I'm like, "Uh, no, that's getting a little too direct." I could understand an @ from someone I'd already interacted with, even if I couldn't donate, but some rando out of the blue--those just looked too--constructed.
@Tarrenvane "too constructed" well said!
@Tarrenvane
That's what got me, too. I boost happily and chip in when I can but a random message directly to me is weird and gets a block.
@vlrny
@vlrny Good heads-up, thanks!
@vlrny@disabled.social Thanks! Good reminder to also report them. So your admin has a chance to fight the spam/fraud
@vlrny@disabled.social (Sparkles) they tend to disappear shortly afterwards, this is an important pattern with them
@vlrny multiple from troet.cafe too, that seems to be a problem with that server :(
