We mask to feel safe, not to hide who we are.
We hide who we are, because who we are is not safe in our current world.
If we want Autistic people to not mask so much, we need them to feel safe.
@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix I personally started dropping (most of) the pretense and making it more obvious who I am when talking to people. This is only possible because of my relative confidence now at 30-something... I know I can take most of what random social interactions throw at me, and I am less worried about perception than I used to be. This relates to the third sentence in there.
